Spouse or Common Law Partner in Canada
Canada values the family unit and wants it to remain intact. As a result, the IRCC offers spousal or common law sponsorship, where the Canadian partner (sponsor) can assist their non-Canadian partner in receiving Permanent Residence. The in-land application is used for those sponsors whose non-Canadian spouse/ partner is residing in Canada.
The application consists of two parts –
- The first where the Canadian Citizen/ Permanent Resident apply to sponsor their spouse/ partner.
- The second step is for the applicant to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence.
This application requires for the partners to prove the legitimacy of their relationship under one of the following categories:
- Spouse
- Common-law Partner
- Conjugal Partner
The sponsor is required to take financial responsibility of the sponsored person for up to 3 years after they become a permanent resident. Please contact us for more details.

The out-land application is used for those sponsors whose non-Canadian spouse/ partner is residing outside of Canada.
The application consists of two parts –
- The first where the Canadian Citizen/ Permanent Resident apply to sponsor their spouse/ partner.
- The second step is for the applicant to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence.
This application requires for the partners to prove the legitimacy of their relationship under one of the following categories:
- Spouse
- Common-law Partner
